Who are we?
We are a welcoming group of community-minded hobbists who enjoy model railroading with a focus on realism both in our scenery and in operations. We will offer both HO and N scale layouts as well as a modular layout that we take to shows. We are constructing our own clubhouse inspired by the Hendersonville, NC depot. While the building is still in the construction phase, we are actively seeking charter members who can help us plan and build the vision. Just like no two trains are identical, we welcome diversity of individuals and ideas.
Our history
In the Spring of 2017 we found a lot off Piney Green Rd that looked like it could meet our needs. After some anxious time waiting for rezoning approval, we acquired the lot 526 Swains Loop Road in Jacksonville, NC. Using machetes, we cut through some underbrush and started drawing out plans for what our ideal club might look like. Drawings on napkins were replaced with computer mock ups and eventually a set of building plans.
Over the last several years, the land was cleared and members have worked as a labor of love to build a foundation, enclose the building, and begin the interior work. We are always happy to have volunteers join us on Saturdays at The Depot!
Our goal
To be the largest privately owned model railroad club on the East Coast supporting our community with educational programming for special needs students, veterans, and underserved citizens. We wanted a building that would reflect our love for trains and spaces to meet, model, and make. Our final design includes a large meeting/classroom, a library, a workshop, and over 2,800 sq ft of layouts.
All aboard
As a 501(c)(3)Non-profit, MREC accepts tax deductible donations for those interested in supporting our club and its mission. Our future goals include hosting STEM related programs for special needs students. We will also work with our community to support veterans and under served communities.
